There are a number of situations in which renting storage units is a great idea, but the important thing is choosing the right size. If you choose too small a space, you will have to go through the work and frustration of moving everything again into a larger unit. If you choose too large a space, you will be faced with having to move everything to a smaller unit or paying for more space than you really need. It isn’t that difficult to choose the right size storage units though. Just follow a few simple steps:
- Make a list of the items you plan to put into storage.
- Construct a plan as to how you will need the items organized when they are in storage. For example, if you will be able to stack items to the ceiling or if you need easier access to certain items. Consider how much space the items are currently taking up. If your items are filling a 1-car garage and are stacked tightly, you will need a similar size – 10’ x 20’ is typical. You will need a larger space if you need to leave space for accessing items on a regular basis.
- If you plan to store a large item such as a car or boat, be sure you choose a space wide and long enough for it to fit, unless you are going with outdoor storage.
- Visit the storage facility prior to actually reserving a space, so you can see what the space looks like. The height of the units can vary from place to place, so be sure to ask, as this will affect how high you can stack items.
